Standard Cutters

Dormer manufactures a wide variety of standard cutters to cover a wide range of milling applications, for example, slot milling, semi-finishing, end milling and roughing.

The standard cutter ranges are manufactured in HSS, HSCo and HSCo-XP with bright finish, TiCN or Super-R coatings. HSS is for general use in most materials, HSCo can be run at higher speeds for increased productivity, whilst HSCo-XP is a powder metallurgy cobalt steel, which gives added toughness and edge strength to the cutter. TiCN coating on cutters reduces surface friction, whilst Super-R multi-layer coating exhibits low internal stress and gives high toughness and wear resistance.

As a guideline, the following cutters are used for the following operations:

End Mills For profile milling and producing open slots where a plunge feed is not required
Slot DrillsFor producing precision slots and keyways, they are centre cutting and can plunge feed to produce closed slots or pockets
3 flute Slot DrillsThese combine the roles of the slot drill and the end mill, enabling greater productivity than a 2-flute slot drill, due to the additional tooth.
Ball Nosed Slot DrillsDesigned to produce slots and profiles with a radius form
Roughing CuttersDesigned for applications where rapid metal removal is required. The sinusoidal chipbreaker profile is for general roughing, whilst the truncated chipbreaker profile is for roughing where a better quality finish is required.

Dormer standard cutters are available in flatted, cylindrical and screwed shanks. Flatted shank provides the best rigidity for cutters, even at their maximum operating conditions, resulting in a better tool life. Cylindrical shank tools are clamped in a collet type chuck, enabling ease of axial movement. Screwed shank cutters can be accommodated by one holder through the use of different collets.

British standard cutters’ overall and cut lengths (standard and long) are different from DIN and ISO standards (short, medium, long and extra long). Please consult the Dormer catalogue for nearest equivalents.

For maximum productivity, greater tool life and accuracy, careful cutter selection and the use of correct feeds and speeds is essential. Please consult Dormer’s Application Material Group tables in the catalogue or Product Selector for recommended speeds and feeds for the material to be machined.
